Hostel Suomenlinna offers a variety of immersive nature school days, day-trip packages, and camp school experiences year-round! Dispite our location on a beautiful fortress island, getting here by public transportation is easy. The HSL ferry to Suomenlinna departs from the Market Square and runs regularly from 6am to 2am. The unique environment of Suomenlinna, with historical traces from the 18th century, offers a glimpse into the beautiful archipelago landscape and provides a safe setting for camp schools or other camps. Our themes emphasize the Baltic Sea and archipelago nature, history and cultural heritage, as well as development of teamwork and cooperation skills.
In our compact building, accommodation rooms, dining hall, and activity space are all under the same roof, keeping the class closely together throughout the camp school.

The round of the Ehrensvard Society is carried under high vaults and in the caches of dark corridors. Guided tours will introduce you to Suomenlinna's sometimes even unlucky task as a defensive fortress and visit tunnels and casemates. The granite walls were also inextricably linked to the everyday life and living conditions of the fort.

Take an evening trip to observe the northern starry sky!
On the excursion you will get acquainted with the constellations, hear mythological stories about their birth and observe the sky with the help of a telescope and binoculars. In the Environmental Detectives program, students have access in small groups to explore and observe the environment through functional tasks. Guided by the map, the groups navigate to six different mission sites in the vicinity of the camp center, where they will be faced with different research challenges.

Goals
The functional exploration guides the student to understand the structures and processes of nature and the human impact on the environment. The programme supports the growth of environmentally responsible thinking and action, develops multi-literacy skills and the interpretation of nature and research results in various forms.
Content and mode of operation
During the Baltic Sea researchers' excursion, students study and observe the environment in small groups and reflect on the significance of the observations. At the end of the programme, the research results will be collated and we will find out what belongs to the Baltic Sea today. We also consider how our own activities affect the state of the Baltic Sea.

Suomenlinna is the oldest UNESCO World Heritage Site in Finland. It is easy to explore the history and cultural heritage of the fortress by combining the award-winning Suomenlinna Experience short film, museum visits and the Secret Lives of Suomenlinna programme. The Secret Lives program delves into the swirls of history through tasks that require creativity and humor.

Finally, the experiences are unpacked together under the guidance of the instructor to capture the lessons learned.

Does pineapple belong in pizza?
This program specifically develops communication and interaction skills, as toppings for pizzas must be agreed with your own pizza group. All students are allowed to participate.

During the pizza trip, students learn about the responsibility of different food choices and their carbon footprint with a fun card game.
At the end of the program, we will have a pizza dinner together!
